The Origins Of YWHW

In this modern world, we are indoctrinated early that the god of Abraham is God…the creator…the one who was here in the beginning. This may not be so.

YWHW…or Yahweh…did not exist in ancient Israel…if you consider Israel to be “ancient” at all. The gods who ruled that land before modern times were El and his consort Asherah. Yes, a “couple”…male and female. A competing god at the time was Ba’al, who was essentially a “storm” god.

Down in Edom, their god is Qos. Farther down in Midian is where Yahweh was worshiped. There is an ancient inscription over Sinai way about “Yahweh and his Asherah”. Now the question arises if “Asherah” is a name or a title, or is Yahweh being equated with El in this?

Farther down in Egypt, at Soleb, is the oldest known inscription mentioning Yahweh by name. On a temple there is the phrase “Yahweh in the land of Shassu”. This was a land of a nomadic tribe.

This is just the beginning of how and where this god Yahweh came to be.
